Scottish business leaders seek clarity on new environmental regulations

Over 50 businesses and public sector organisations will gather in Edinburgh today for a seminar exploring how they can keep pace with changing environmental legislation in facilities management.

Over 50 businesses and public sector organisations will gather in Edinburgh today for a seminar exploring how they can keep pace with changing environmental legislation in facilities management.

Attendees include The Scottish Government, RBS and the NHS Lothian, as well as representatives from Zero Waste Scotland, the government organisation dedicated to helping individuals, businesses and communities to reduce their waste levels.

The event, organised by FTSE 250 strategic outsourcing company Mitie, will advise businesses on how they can ensure they are compliant, while also using their resources as efficiently as possible.

Following the Scottish government’s ambitious target to make at least 70% of all materials recyclable by 2025, the focus will be on the key regulatory changes that companies need to consider.

Among those topics to be covered will be the new waste legislation in Scotland, which requires all organisations to segregate dry recyclables – including paper, card and plastic – by the end of 2013.

Sector heads within Mitie will also look at how to reduce waste consumption in commercial kitchens, ahead of the ban on sink macerators in Scotland, which are seen as a major drain on electricity.

New European directives are also changing the landscape for pest control services, compelling contractors and building managers to adapt their processes as permanent baiting around buildings will no longer be acceptable as a routine measure.

Laraine McBean, Director of Mitie’s facilities management business in Scotland, said: “It’s encouraging to see Scotland leading the way when it comes to addressing the issue of resource management, which is now rightly seen a critical business issue.

“As new regulations pour in, all too often our clients are kept awake at night worrying about whether or not they are compliant. This event aims to draw out the most important implications for businesses, ultimately leading to both financial and resource savings in the future.”

The event is taking place in Edinburgh at the Signet Library in Parliament Square.
