Noel was inspecting the rear of the property in Enfield, London when he noticed smoke pouring out of the back window. He quickly went round to the front and knocked on the door to see if the resident was inside, there was no answer.

Luckily she had left a spare key under the door matt so he let himself in to check - thankfully he found the property empty so exited quickly. During this time a colleague proceeded to phone the fire brigade and after exiting the property Noel contacted Pauline South (Planned Project Manager for London and Quadrant).

Residents from neighbouring properties started gathering in the road saying they could smell burning.

Pauline contacted the resident’s family and found out the lady had been away from the property for almost 6 hours, therefore was unaware of the situation. The cause of the fire was a faulty kettle which almost broke out in flames, the kitchen was black and the property thick with smoke but the fire crew said they had caught it just in time. Pauline subsequently contacted the Neighbourhood Services Team to arrange for an electrician to visit all properties on the estate to make sure they were safe.

London and Quadrant were delighted with Mitie’s Painting Foreman Noel whose vigilance averted a potential disaster.

Pauline South, Planned Maintenance Manager stated:
“Noel’s quick thinking ensured the vulnerable residents life was not in danger, saved her property from burning down and stopped surrounding properties from potential damage. We were extremely grateful for Noel’s actions and awarded him a cheque to thank him for his courage.”

Noel Barry stated: “There were a few scary moments when I entered the property thinking that the resident might be in danger. I’d like to thank L&Q for the award - I did what any other person would do.”

Noel Barry has been nominated for the Mitie Stars Award 2014 for his bravery. The scheme recognises and rewards individuals and teams that go above and beyond for clients and/or colleagues.
