Mitie has launched its new Technical Services Apprenticeship Programme, aimed at attracting and developing the next generation of engineers and ensuring it has the talent and expertise to continue supporting its customers for years to come. As part of the programme, Mitie has pledged to hire 50 new apprentices in its Technical Services business, 16 of whom have already been recruited and started their training.
The programme will offer a range of technical apprenticeships, including electrical or mechanical engineering, to individuals starting their careers in facilities management. The apprenticeships will last between three and four years, with colleagues combining their studies with on-the-job working at range of Mitie’s clients’ sites. Once they have completed the programme and received their qualifications, all apprentices will be offered the opportunity to continue their career at Mitie. With apprentices joining Mitie from a range of backgrounds, the initiative will not only allow new recruits to learn new skills, it will also help Mitie bring fresh ideas and insights into the business.
Mitie delivers engineering and maintenance services for hundreds of clients, many of which require technical support in highly complex environments, such as jet engine blade manufacturing or phone mast maintenance. As many of these roles require the development of specialist skills, Mitie will also be working closely with clients to create bespoke training for new recruits.
The launch of the new Apprenticeship Programme marks the first phase of Mitie’s Technical Services Academy, which has been designed to prevent future skills gaps and promote career development. The Academy will support colleagues at every stage of their career and will consist of four elements – Early Careers, Supervisor Essentials, Tech X and Career Pathways.
Employees joining the academy will be able to access support, including formal training and mentorship, to help them progress to the next stage of their career. For example, Supervisor Essentials will help frontline colleagues take the first steps towards management roles, Tech X will offer access to technical courses and qualifications for employees looking to upskill, and Career Pathways will support colleagues in transitioning to an operational management role.
Carlo Alloni, Managing Director, Technical Services and Integrated Facilities Management, Mitie, said:
“Our business is nothing without our people. This new apprenticeship programme, as part of our Technical Services Academy, will help us kickstart the careers of the next generation of engineers and ensure that we continue delivering the best service for our customers. We’re committed to supporting learning and development for all our Technical Services colleagues, no matter where they are in their career journey, and look forward to rolling out the next three stages of our Academy.”
