Mitie taps into AWE Water Network Management contract

  • Mitie has secured a contract with AWE Nuclear Security Technologies (AWE) using the new water management capabilities following the acquisition of Marlowe, to manage critical water infrastructure
  • Mitie will oversee the operation, maintenance and long-term development of complex water, wastewater, fire systems and trade waste networks supporting UK defence infrastructure
  • A new data-led operating model and long-term upgrade programme will support AWE’s sustainability ambitions

Mitie has secured a Water Network Management contract with AWE, using the new water management capabilities following the acquisition of Marlowe in March 2026.

Working alongside AWE, Mitie will manage the operation and long-term development of private water, wastewater, fire systems and trade waste networks across three Berkshire sites, Aldermaston, Burghfield and Blacknest. The contract covers assets across AWE’s complex, high-security estate, including boreholes, treatment plants, pumping stations and reservoirs.

A new, data-led operating model that embeds real-time monitoring and structured intelligence into day-to-day delivery will be introduced to improve visibility of water use across the network, reducing risk and supporting more effective long-term planning.

Mitie will deliver a long-term programme of upgrades to modernise infrastructure and improve water resilience. This will involve replacing ageing pipework and legacy assets, some of which date back to before the Second World War, through targeted projects such as cast-iron mains replacement, installation of advanced meters to monitor leakage and upgrades to pumping systems.

Across the contract, Mitie will maintain a complex network of critical infrastructure, including water treatment plants, reservoirs, abstraction systems, drainage networks and flood management assets, ensuring reliable 24/7 operation to rigorous resilience standards.

Sustainability is central to the contract. Planned initiatives include automated meter reading, leakage detection, rainwater harvesting and trials to generate hydrogen from wastewater.

Mitie’s partnership with Severn Trent Services (STS) is a key part of the delivery model, STS brings a strong track record in managing complex water networks in secure and highly regulated environments, closely aligned to AWE’s requirements.

Geoff Smith, Director of Managed Water Services, Mitie, said:

“This contract reflects AWE’s focus on long-term partnership and collaboration and we are pleased to be delivering it together with Severn Trent Services. Working closely with AWE, our shared focus is on moving towards a more proactive, data-led approach that supports sustainability goals and ensures AWE’s water infrastructure is fit for the future.”

Andy Lee, Managing Director, Severn Trent Services, said:

“Securing this long-term contract with AWE is a landmark achievement for Severn Trent Services. It reflects the strength, expertise, and dedication of our teams, as well as the trust placed in us to manage vital water and wastewater infrastructure that underpins the UK’s national security.

“We’re proud to be working in partnership with Mitie to support AWE’s important mission, and we look forward to delivering operational excellence, innovation, and long-term value over the life of the contract.”
