Mitie is the first FM company to sign up to all three of The Climate Group’s initiatives – EV100, EP100 and RE100

  • Mitie has joined The Climate Group’s RE100 initiative, committing to only use 100% renewable electricity across all its sites – which Mitie has already achieved
  • Mitie is the eighth company in the world and first in the FM industry to join all three of The Climate Group’s initiatives – EP100, EV100 and RE100
  • Membership to RE100 is part of the company’s Plan Zero commitment to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2025

Mitie, the UK’s leading facilities management and professional services company, has signed up to the RE100 initiative, committing to use only renewable energy across all its sites. This makes it the first facilities management company to sign up to all three of The Climate Group’s initiatives EV100, EP100 and RE100, and only the eighth company in the world to make this commitment.

Companies joining RE100 must target 100% renewable electricity use by 2050. However, Mitie has already achieved this goal by switching to 100% renewable energy across its business. This pledge to only use 100% renewable energy sources is a key part of Mitie’s Plan Zero commitment to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2025.

RE100 is a global initiative led by the international non-profit The Climate Group to bring together companies committed to only using renewable electricity by 2050. RE100 is the third initiative by The Climate Group that Mitie has joined, having signed-up to EV100 in 2019, committing to convert its entire fleet to electric vehicles, and EP100 in 2020, with the promise to double its energy productivity over the next 25 years. Mitie is just the eighth company in the world and the first in the FM industry to join all three of The Climate Group initiatives.

In addition to its commitment to only use renewable energy across all its sites, Mitie is developing new systems allowing it to pay directly for the electricity employees use at home to charge their Mitie electric vehicles (EV). This will ensure that Mitie’s EV fleet will be truly carbon neutral, as only renewable energy will be used to charge electric vehicles. It will also allow Mitie to track energy consumption right across the business, so that it can identify more ways to maximise the company’s energy productivity.

As part of its Plan Zero commitment, Mitie will also use its expertise in renewable energy, sustainable infrastructure and efficient buildings to support its clients as they work to achieve their own sustainability and zero carbon goals. Through Mitie Energy the company is already supporting its customers by procuring their renewable energy as well as helping them to reduce their energy consumption, for example by installing sophisticated building management systems, transitioning to zero-carbon fleets or decarbonising heating systems.

Simon King, Director of Sustainability and Social Value at Mitie, said:

“As the first facilities management company and only the eighth business in the world to join all three of The Climate Group’s initiatives, we’re proud to be leading by example as we act on our commitment to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2025. Having already switched to 100% renewable energy across our business, we’re driving ahead with our fully electric fleet and well on our way to fulfilling our Plan Zero pledge to eliminate carbon emissions from both power and transport.

“The obvious next step is to use our experience and expertise to support our clients in switching to renewable energy and achieving their own net zero targets.”

Sam Kimmins, Head of RE100, said:

“We are pleased to welcome Mitie on board to RE100 and applaud their work on switching to 100% renewable energy across their business. Mitie’s membership of all three of The Climate Group’s business initiatives shows that they are serious about sustainability and are taking leadership on clean power. We urge others in the sector to follow their lead and make the commitment to renewable electricity.”
