Mitie, the FTSE 250 strategic outsourcing and energy services company, has held its second annual Volunteering Month, with different initiatives set up across the UK as a way to engage with and help local communities.
Some of the biggest projects Mitie employees contributed to included supporting a soup kitchen run by Franciscan Friars in Bradford and getting involved in a conservation project at Bristol Zoo.
In Bristol, 17 Mitie employees spent a full day at Bristol Zoo clearing away a large amount of undergrowth, hedgerow, trees, chicken wire fences and general detritus.
Clearing away the undergrowth has enabled the zoo to uncover the old stables and means that the area can now be developed into a Wildlife Park.
Another major project was in Bradford where the regional managing director of Mitie’s Total Security Management business and six members of his team supported a local soup kitchen run by The Franciscan Friars of the Renewal.
The soup kitchen is used by homeless people experiencing extreme personal hardship who require advice and support, as well as a wholesome meal.
In addition to running the kitchen, the team donated £355 raised through general collections and sponsorship for the ongoing running of the kitchen.

- Playground refurbishment in Linlithgo
- DIY workshops in Essex
- Clean up at Banardos in Weston Super Mare
- Children’s play area restoration for the BBC’s SOS Big Build project, THE YARD, in Edinburgh
- Warehouse sorting for Crisis UK in London
- World at Work day at Caldervale High School in Glasgow
- Working with Kingdom Homes to give time to the elderly in Edinburgh
- Maintenance and painting at a local church in Pontypridd
