Mitie, the connected workspace and professional services business, has helped its client, Network Rail, achieve the Carbon Trust Standard for Waste across all of its UK corporate offices and training centres.
The Carbon Trust Standard is the world’s leading independent certification of an organisation’s impact on the environment, verifying action on the three primary components of environmental sustainability: energy use and associated greenhouse gas (CO2e) emissions, water use and waste output.
The Carbon Trust Standard for Waste provides a framework for organisations to measure, manage and reduce their waste outputs, recognising those that demonstrate leadership within their industry by making real year-on-year progress. The qualitative assessment conducted as part of this certification saw Network Rail achieve a high score of 82%, placing them within the top 20% of all organisations assessed by the Carbon Trust.
Mitie implemented a range of ongoing initiatives which were instrumental in helping Network Rail achieve the certification. These included:
the installation of a food digester on one of Network Rail’s largest sites - helping to reduce food waste by approximately 96 tonnes per annum
the addition of a toner recycling service across all UK sites
the placement of new bins to help increase sustainability awareness and engagement
Duncan Rutter, Sustainable Development Manager for Mitie’s contract at Network Rail, who oversaw the certification process commented: “This is an excellent achievement, and demonstrates our efforts to provide a first class service at Network Rail. We’re focused on ever-improving Network Rail’s waste performance and continue to set goals to implement our comprehensive waste management strategy across the UK.”
David Biggs, Managing Director of Network Rail Property said: “We all have a role to play when it comes to the safe and sustainable disposal of waste, and at Network Rail we take this responsibility very seriously.
“The Carbon Standard is recognition of the huge effort that Network Rail has shown in reducing our carbon foot print and the fact that we have scored so highly in our assessment further demonstrates our commitment to environmental protection.”
