Mitie, the FTSE 250 strategic outsourcing and energy services company, is very proud to have been involved in helping BBC Children in Need as part of a BBC 1 special programme: “DIY SOS: The Big Build”.
The programme features the renovation of a centre for children with additional needs in Edinburgh. The Yard helps children and young people from the ages of 3 to 25. It is an indoor and outdoor space that welcomes the whole family.
This year the centre celebrates 25 years of helping families deal with the demands of daily life, giving the young people a space to develop their confidence and encouraging them to make lasting friendships.
The Yard receives a grant towards its costs from BBC Children in Need. However, the building and its outdoor space were in desperate need of a total overhaul.
Mitie donated the time, knowledge and skills of more than 25 of our operatives to BBC Children in Need to provide an adventure playground for the Yard.
This included a climbing frame, rope bridge, trampoline and a tunnel through to the sensory garden.
The build took ten days from the end of September to the beginning of October 2012. In all, over 300 people helped transform both the building and outdoor play area.
Craig Boath, Regional Director, Mitie Property Services said: “Mitie operatives put around 2,400 volunteering hours into this project – working 12-hour days to get it finished on time . I’m very grateful to those who took part, with the updated look and feel the centre should carry on for at least another 25 years.”
The Big Build Children in Need Special will be shown on BBC1 at 8pm on Wednesday 14th November.
