Mitie, the FTSE 250 strategic outsourcer, has celebrated 50 years of experience in the lighting sector. It’s a story of industry firsts and major milestones for the UK’s largest lighting maintenance business.
The 50 year anniversary was celebrated at an event in London, where Kerry Sheehan, managing director of the business, spoke about its journey and achievements.
Mitie’s lighting business had humble beginnings but it’s grown to be an industry leader. The business began life as Parkersell in 1964, after an entrepreneurial cleaner offered to change broken lamps while he cleaned window displays. In the same year, Parkersell began delivering lighting services to 12 Boots sites. In 1969 their services were developed and expanded to cover 25 sites.
Since then the company has grown from a small organisation into a large lighting contractor. In 1975, Parkersell partnered with Tesco and in 1976 was awarded a significant contract Sainsbury’s.
2010 saw an acquisition by Mitie and the subsequent expansion of the business across the UK. As a result, Mitie’s lighting business was able to offer clients a bespoke service, promising local service on a national scale.
The lighting business has continued to innovate with the launch of the Lighting in Future Environments (LIFE) proposition in 2012. LIFE addresses all aspects of a client’s lighting from bespoke design to installation and maintenance.
The company has also been at the forefront of installing LED technology to help the retail sector reduce its energy consumption.
Kerry Sheehan, managing director of Mitie’s lighting business, said: “This past year has cemented Mitie as the largest lighting maintenance contractor in the UK with the successful extension of contracts with leading retailers including Boots and Tesco.
“We’re very proud of the growth of the lighting business and its rich and varied history. With 50 years of experience in the sector under our belts, we know we can offer clients the best possible service and expert knowledge.”
