Mitie, the FTSE 250 strategic outsourcer, has won a £3 million security contract with Essar Oil (UK) Ltd, part of Essar Energy, the integrated energy company.
The contract was awarded to Mitie’s total security management business following a competitive tender process where Mitie presented its approach to delivering integrated and risk-based security services.
Mitie was chosen based on its experience of working in high-risk environments, such as the oil and gas industry and its specialist knowledge of the critical national infrastructure and defence sectors.
The contract will involve Mitie providing security for the Stanlow refinery in Cheshire, the second biggest oil refinery in the UK, acquired by Essar Energy in 2011.
The Stanlow refinery processes about 235kbd of oil each day and supplies 15% of the UK’s transport fuel, making it a critical part of the country’s national infrastructure.
Mitie will be responsible for controlling access and exit to the site to protect the assets, as well as the high numbers of staff and visitors at the site.
Bob Forsyth, managing director at Mitie’s total security management business, commented:
“I am delighted to be working with Essar Oil at Stanlow. Our experience with other clients in the critical national infrastructure sector makes us best placed to offer a security partnership through understanding the needs of a high risk environment.”
Essar Oil UK’s fire and security manager, Stuart Warburton, commented:
“We are very happy to have Mitie working alongside us on this site. In choosing a security partner, we needed one that understood the sector and how to mitigate the risks in our specialist environment.
“Their ability to provide high calibre staff during surge periods, and their ability to offer security industry best practice was a key factor for us in selecting Mitie.”
