Mitie Landscapes and Vodafone UK hold a ‘make your own hanging basket day’, raising over £5,000 for the Avenue School.

The event, held last month at Vodafone UK’s HQ in Newbury, encouraged Vodafone employees and visitors to put their green fingers to work by creating their very own hanging basket which they could then purchase through a donation to The Avenue School in Reading.

A total of 320 hanging baskets were made and purchased over the course of the day, raising over £2650 which was generously matched by Vodafone, bringing the grand total to £5,300.

The Avenue School is a special needs academy for boys and girls aged 2 – 19 years old that have complex special educational needs and the money raised will go towards building a secret reading garden in the school’s grounds, providing a peaceful, new haven for the pupils to enjoy.

The idea for the hanging baskets charity event was conceived by Mitie Landscapes’ Contract Manager for Vodafone, Rob Blake who commented, “I thought it would be a great way to raise money for a good cause. As it’s summer time, I thought that the seasonal relevance of the hanging basket would make it an appealing charity challenge that people would be happy to engage in. We’re very pleased with the result and Vodafone has been wonderful with its support.’

An enjoyable and creative time was had by all and Sarah Spooner, Head of Legal for Vodafone UK said, “I just want to thank Rob’s team. Over the two days, we raised an amazing £5,300 which means the school can now build its secret reading garden during the summer. We really appreciate the support Mitie has given to this project and to everyone who donated their time.”
