Interserve is delivering four major LED and light improvement schemes at hospitals across the UK that will reduce the NHS’s carbon footprint, save money and provide better illumination.
Once all the current projects are completed by the company’s Support Services and Construction businesses, they will deliver annual forecast savings of 4,750,000 kWh – which equates to a financial saving of almost £500,000 per annum for the NHS.
In recent years, Interserve has already delivered six LED and light improvement schemes at hospitals located from the south coast up to Scotland.
Interserve’s Energy & Compliance team works across its Support Services contracts, identifying ways for customers to reduce their carbon footprint and make significant savings on energy bills by implementing initiatives such as the installation of more efficient Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, improved lighting -including LED solutions - and embedded low carbon generation.
The company’s ability to deliver innovative low energy lighting system conversions across the NHS is highlighted by work delivered at Airedale NHS Foundation Hospital Trust, based in West and North Yorkshire.
Interserve’s contract, delivered via the Trust’s Carbon Energy Fund (CEF) framework, included the replacement of two existing steam-raising boilers with a gas-fired combined heat and power plant (835kWe and 986kWth) and high efficiency dual fuel (gas and oil) boiler (3MW), plus demand reduction measures including a new automated lux-sensitive lighting system and the replacement of 2,867 luminaires.
The luminaire replacement delivers an energy reduction of 1,119,199 kWh per annum reducing associated CO2 emissions by 76 per cent and reducing running costs by £115,000 per annum.

The CHP and lighting upgrades have reduced electricity use by 5,000,000 KWH per annum and maintained similar gas usage of 26,000,000 KWH per annum. This is equivalent to the energy needed to power 1,200 houses and equates to a saving of 1,800 tonnes of carbon.
