Interserve Emergency Department Porter Terry Allen Awarded British Empire Medal

Interserve Emergency Department Porter Terry Allen has been awarded a British Empire Medal in recognition of his work during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 63-year-old works at the University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH) and is based in the Accident & Emergency department.

Terry’s role has included transferring patients suspected of having COVID-19 to take them for diagnosis. He also transfers patients from A&E for CAT and MRI scans and x-rays.

The Queen’s Birthday Honours list was published three-days-ago and includes 1,495 people, the majority of whom have received recognition for work done in response to COVID-19. UCLH’s Chief Executive Officer Marcel Levi was the prime sponsor for Terry’s nomination because he deeply appreciated the work Terry has undertaken.

Interserve delivers critical portering, catering, cleaning and postage services at UCLH.

David Johnson, Interserve’s Support Services Manager, said: “Terry always goes above and beyond and does his best to make sure the whole team delivers an excellent service to patients and the hospital.

“He comes in early, works out if there are any issues which need to be addressed and makes sure everything runs smoothly.

“I am delighted his efforts have been recognised in this way. I am proud of the work delivered by my whole team. They have worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic as part of the hospital’s response to COVID-19.”

Terry Allen, Emergency Department Porter, said: “It’s a hard job and we take pride in doing it well, but I very much see the award as recognition for the whole team.

“It has been a tough time. We have lost colleagues to COVID-19 and working throughout the pandemic and continuing to fulfil portering duties was intense, but we have had terrific support from the management team and hospital as a whole.

“Doctors, consultants, nurses and all of our staff, we have all been impacted by the pandemic, but we are also proud of the service we deliver.”

Marcel Levi, UCLH’s Chief Executive, said: “Terry is one of the best porters in the world. Nurses and doctors are often in the spotlight, as they should be, but support staff also deserve recognition for the great work they do. Terry works so very hard for our patients and UCLH. This award is great news.” Lynn Mawdsley, Managing Director of Interserve’s Support Services business, added: “I am delighted that Terry has received the British Empire Medal in recognition of his unstinting efforts as a porter at UCLH during the pandemic.

“Terry quite rightly references the work of the whole team, but it takes a special kind of person to step up like he did during such a challenging time and to ensure that essential services are delivered.

“Terry is a worthy of recipient of this honour and a fantastic ambassador for Interserve and what outsourcing has delivered during COVID-19.”
